Day 2 of driving brought us into California right around lunch time. We ate at a little mom and pop cafe and then we started exploring the Redwoods. We started with a little hike. The kids were ready to be out of the car and explore.

This is one of my favorite pictures of Sam taking it all in. The trees are so huge. The bark is so beautiful. The sun shining through them makes you feel like you are in a fantasy movie. It's a bit magical.

Look at the size of that tree...huge!
Then we went to the
Trees of Mystery and met Paul Bunyan and Babe:

The boys were prepared for Paul to talk, they had been forewarned. I don't think they thought he would be able to hear them though. Will walks up and says really quietly,
"Hey Sam, I'm going to punch him in the foot." Paul says
, "Punch me in the foot huh? I'd like to see you try that!" Startled, the boys wanted to know how in the world he heard that. Then they started asking him questions. How many trees has he chopped down? 1,900,738

A new addition to the
Trees of Mystery is the Skyline (gondola) that takes you up to the top of the mountain. Well new since my visit around 1990 or so. Lucy was a little in awe of the ride that left us dangling in the tree tops.

We ended our day in
Arcata, CA where we happened to come upon a brand new Hampton Inn. Jackpot! Road tripping without definite plans means not knowing exactly where you're going to end up at the end of the day. It could go either way. We drove by some
doozies. Needless to say we decided to make this our home base for the next couple days. The first thing we did after dinner was swim...swim...and swim
some more...then crash really hard. Next up...
Avenue of the Giants ...
